The waters around our island hold an enormous variety and abundance of fish… fun to catch and delicious to eat!

Charters

Common fish species caught onboard:

  • BLACK SEA BASS

  • Caught on MV Skipper: Black sea bass!

  • Delicious white meat that can be baked, broiled, or fried. A superior game fish, this bottom fish is often found near rocks, feeding on crabs and small fishes. Average 3 lbs. but can go up to 6lbs.

  • FLUKE (Summer Flounder)

  • Caught on MV Skipper: Fluke, Summer Flounder

  • Everyone's favorite member of the Flounder family of bottom fish. The top side is brown, the bottom side is white or pale. Anglers get them near the shore in summer from Maine to South Carolina. Average 3-5 lbs.


  • SCUP (Porgy)

  • Caught on MV Skipper: Scup

  • Small-mouth fish with a strong jaw and teeth. Adapted to feeding on shellfish and crustaceans. Silver in color, usually 1-3 lbs. and found on sandy bottoms.

  • TAUTOG

  • Caught on MV Skipper: Tautog

  • A very good food and game fish, averages 6 lbs. and is found in summer around rocks, piers and ledges feeding on mussels and other mollusks. Tastes great as Cape Cod Fish & Chips, and as Fish Chowder.

About the Skipper

The Skipper is a safe and fully equipped fishing boat. She is licensed and inspected annually by the Coast Guard. A powerful diesel engine propels her at 10 knots to the fishing grounds. There are two radios, two fathometers, radar, and a GPS to insure your safety.

If you've never been deep-sea fishing before, no worries! Our professional crew will be glad to give you instructions on how to use our state-of-the-art fishing gear.

Fish caught by passengers can be cleaned and prepared by our crew members to be taken home, for a nominal charge.

Sunset charters are primarily on a private basis for families and groups looking for a shorter fishing trip as well as a unique view of the picturesque Vineyard shoreline as the sun sets over the Elizabeth Islands. Bring a cooler with food and beverages of your choice. Catering is available upon request.

Cruise from Oak Bluffs Harbor with Massachusetts Audubon Society naturalists to explore the waters of Vineyard Sound aboard the Coast Guard licensed vessel Skipper. We will tow a plankton net, use a scallop drag, and check lobster and fish traps for the diversity of crabs, fish and shellfish that live in Vineyard waters. Participants will have a chance to look at the catch up close and to try their hand at scup fishing if time permits. This cruise is a great way to experience the tranquility of the ocean at sunset while learning about this important ecosystem.
